Girlfriendz is a spirited ensemble of nine
women in song. Known for joyous, tight vocal harmonies, the eclectic repertoire they sing spans the decades and runs the musical gamut from jazz to rock, folk to pop, R&B to Broadway.
The group was formed in 1999 and is directed and accompanied by noted Bay Area jazz vocalist and choral director Ellen Robinson. As openings arise, new singers are auditioned by invitation only. This group is currently filled.
The Girlfriendz performance schedule includes a mix of fee-based concerts as well as volunteer appearances at open mikes, benefits, retirement homes and other institutions. Recent performances include: concerts sponsored by Bread & Roses, the San Leandro Arts Council and the National Women’s Political Caucus; open mic featured acts at Anna’s Jazz Island and Freight & Salvage in Berkeley, and at Home of Truth in Alameda; and community shows at Claremont House, Lake Park, Piedmont Gardens, and St. Paul’s Towers retirement homes in Oakland, and at Laguna Honda Hospital in San Francisco.
